How many yards of fabric do I need for a no-sew blanket? ›

While the size of your blanket is up to you, you'll want at least 1.5 to 2 yards of fleece to make a blanket. You can use the smaller amount for a child's blanket, but you'll probably want the full 2 yards if making one that's meant to be shared or for an adult.

Minky fleece is an ideal choice for this type of blanket because it requires minimal effort and no sewing skills. Here are the steps to make a no-sew baby blanket with minky fabric: Materials Needed: Two coordinating pieces of minky fleece (1 yard of each color for a baby-sized blanket)

I would use at least 2 yards of fabric for a blanket for an adult. Make sure that the length and the width are in whole numbers so you can cut the strips evenly. You don't want to be left with half strips at the end.

Fabric Requirements

Heavy fleece, like anti-pill polar fleece, may be too thick for this project. Two yards is ideal for adult-size blankets and one yard works for child-size blankets.

Make 5 inch cuts all the way around the edges of the fabric, 1 inch apart. Pick up each strip of fabric and tie it in a ballon knot, wrapping the piece around your finger and tying it like you would a balloon. Continue all the way around the blanket, tying each fringe piece into a knot.

You can absolutely knit a blanket without circular needles. To knit a blanket using straight needles, you'll want to create thinner strips or pieces and use an invisible seaming method to join them together. This approach is often better for beginners and more portable for taking your blanket project with you.

There are two great ways to attach fabric without sewing: fabric glue or a fusible bonding tape like Dritz Stitch Witchery. If you have a sewing machine, sewing is often still the fastest and most reliable method for many projects, but fabric glue or Stitch Witchery are great alternatives.

Textured stitch patterns make for great blankets. Not only do they look amazing, but the extra weight behind the stitch means the fabric is soft, squishy and super warm. Double waffle stitch is one of my favourites.

A two yard cut of fabric makes a blanket long enough for a teen (although a bit narrow), a 1 2/3 yard is perfect for a child 5 to 10 years old and a one yard cut is perfect for a baby or toddler.
